Europe looks ahead to President Obama's agenda
Hans Blix told the German newsmagazine: "Obama should be able to use the strong public opinion in the U.S. to make the country help frame drastic global policies against dangerous climate change and environmental destruction. Technological innovation should be promoted, like fuel cells for cars. Energy must be generated more efficiently and used less wastefully. Obama should stimulate the use of effective renewable sources and overcome any hesitation against a rapid expansion of nuclear power."

Former UN nuclear chief Hans Blix surprised by U.S. intel assessment
GENEVA - Former UN nuclear chief Hans Blix said Wednesday that he's surprised by the U.S. intelligence agencies' conclusion that Iran has stopped developing nuclear weapons.
Blix said he assumed it was because they don't want to take the blame for a new war in the region.
"An armed action against Iran cannot happen after this for the next few years," said Blix, who chairs Sweden's Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.
The veteran Swedish diplomat tried to avert the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq because no weapons of mass destruction were found by UN inspectors.
He said the U.S. intelligence report released Monday caught him off guard.
"I was surprised," Blix told reporters. "For a rather long time we had heard very assured statements from the U.S. side that Iran is acquiring nuclear weapons."

Future lies somewhere between heaven and hell
An article by Hans Blix
Two years ago Kofi Annan rightly noted that the world was "sleepwalking" into new arms races. By now we must wake up to a second inconvenient truth - new build-ups of arms.
The United Kingdom has decided to continue its nuclear submarine program. The United States proposes to develop a new standard nuclear weapon and is expanding its missile shield. China is modernising its armed forces and has shot down a weather satellite of its own, demonstrating a capability for military action in space. Russia has resumed routine long-distance flights with nuclear-armed planes. Iran is developing a uranium enrichment capability that could be used to produce material for nuclear weapons. Non-state actors are planning for further terrorism.

Blix Blasts US Iran Policies
The former head of the UN weapons inspection team for Iraq criticized US policies against Iran, saying Washington's allegations against Iran's nuclear program are unrealistic.
Hans Blix reiterated that US has no document to prove Iran's nuclear program is anything but peaceful.
Pointing to the recent agreement between the IAEA and Iran on the continuation of cooperation, he added, "This agreement has annoyed the US and its allies because it questions their allegations against Iran."
"Iran has an inalienable right to enjoy peaceful nuclear technology. Based on international rules and regulations, Iran has the right to enrich uranium to supply fuel for its nuclear power plants," Blix said.
The former chief UN weapons inspector also challenged US President George Bush's assertion that Iran poses a nuclear threat and the world should take pre-emptive action.
Blix currently is the executive chair of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.

Iraq better off under Saddam, says Blix
Blix comments to Danish newspaper Politiken that "Iraq is a pure failure.
If the Americans pull out, there is a risk that they will leave a country in civil war.
At the same time, it doesn't seem that the United States can help to stabilise the situation by staying there."
